EASTERN CAPE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT

MOTIVATIONAL REMARKS BY MRS N BALINDLELA, MEC FOR SPORT, ARTS AND CULTURE

AT THE EVENING POST MINI MARATHON AT UPE

27 NOVEMBER 1999

It is with greatest of pleasure that I stand here this morning to witness young and old flexing their muscles in an attempt to live a
healthy lifestyle.

Of particular interest is the amount of work being done by volunteers, those people who do it for love and not remuneration. These are, to
me, the unsung heroes who sacrifice valuable family time in fact the entire family derives pleasure at being of assistance to fellow
mankind.

I am certain ladies and gentlemen that we agree the issue is more about participating than winning. We as government are having as a
priority, mass participation as one of our strategic objectives. We call on federations sub-unions and even clubs to engage in campaigns to
make people aware of the benefits that abound in sport and recreation activity.

I would fail in my duties if I do not allude to women and disabled persons participation. We want to urge sport and recreation
administrators to engage in a conscious effort to recruit more women and disabled persons into sport and recreation activities. This is not
only right but is also a positive effort to affirm these groups who have been doubly victimised and ignored in the past. We urge you to do
a bit more in this regard.

To drive the point of healthy lifestyle home we have adopted a very flexible logo in the department: - SISONKE SINAKO which means together
we can.

This logo fits into many aspects of what we do as a department. Today we are here to celebrate the Evening Post Mini Marathon which fits
like a glove into our logo, because without partnerships we would never be able to progress as a country.

I now wish to take this opportunity to thank the Evening Post, UPE and all those who have contributed to the success of this event. Thank
you all for your resources and the time you have put into this.

Lastly, to the athletes thank you for your participation and dedication to sport and recreation. You remain role models to both young and
old. May the Creator grant you more energy and discipline to withstand the pain. We see from you that there is sometimes joy in pain as is
the case when a mother gives birth to a healthy child.

Thank you all.
